If there is one thing I’d encourage any of my students to do before finishing their college course, it is to complete some Work Experience. Now, I don’t just say that because I’m a Work Placement Officer at a college, but because I genuinely believe it’s so important for students and their futures.
We all know how competitive the job market is and one of the biggest challenges young people face is that so many employers are looking for experience. But how do you get that experience if no one gives you the opportunity in the first place?
This is exactly why Work Experience matters for college students.
Of course, having Work Experience on your CV is a great start when looking for work but the benefits go way beyond that.
It’s about getting a feel for what working life is actually like, building confidence in the workplace and discovering what you are good at… and maybe what you are not so good at!
It’s also an opportunity to figure out what you enjoy, which is just as important when you’re trying to decide what you want to do in the future. For me, I completed my college Work Experience around 10 years ago in a nursery… and I learned pretty quickly that route wasn’t for me! It was still a valuable experience though, because it helped me understand what I did and didn’t want to do in my future.
At college, students learn so much in the classroom but putting that knowledge into practice in a real working environment, particularly within their chosen industry, is a completely different experience.
Students learn how to communicate with people they might not usually come across in their day-to-day lives, beyond family, peers and tutors. They learn to manage their time, take some responsibility, work as part of a team and deal with real-world situations they may never have encountered before.
These are all valuable skills that employers look for and they’re not always things you can fully learn from just sitting in the classroom.
So, why is Work Experience particularly important in the Marketing world?
Marketing is one of those industries where showing what you can do is just as important as telling people what you know.
You might understand social media or know all about branding and advertising from your studies, but being able to demonstrate how you’ve put those skills into practice can really help you stand out to employers.
You don’t need to have worked for a big brand or been involved in a huge campaign to gain valuable experience. Employers want to see your potential, your enthusiasm and your willingness to learn, and Work Experience can help you demonstrate these.
Marketing is also an industry that is constantly evolving, so having the opportunity to see how a business operates, how they communicate with their audiences and how they approach things can give you a real head start in the industry.
It also gives you something practical to talk about in an interview. Rather than simply telling an employer that you are a creative person, good at communicating or interested in marketing, you can give them real examples of when you’ve used those skills… on Work Experience!
And definitely don’t underestimate that! In a competitive job market, being able to talk confidently about what you’ve actually done compared to what you just know can make a real difference.
Marketing is one of those industries where showing what you can do is just as important as telling people what you know.
My biggest piece of advice?
Don’t underestimate what Work Experience can do for you as a college student.
Don’t just look at Work Experience as unpaid work or a waste of your time. I know some students would much rather be at home on TikTok or on their PS5, and I get it! Giving up some of your own time to go into a workplace that you’re unfamiliar with might not sound like the most exciting thing in the world at first.
But try looking at it differently. Look at it as an opportunity to gain experience, learn new skills, meet new people and start building your future. You really never know where your Work Experience could lead you.
We have had many success stories at South Hampshire College Group where students have gone on to gain amazing opportunities through their Work Experience placements. This has included:
- full-time jobs
- part-time work
- higher apprenticeships
- or even just a cracking reference to help them with future work or University applications.
Sometimes, Work Experience can lead directly to a job. Other times, it might just help you discover a career you had never considered before or give you the confidence to apply for something you previously thought maybe wasn’t for you.
Even if it doesn’t lead to a job straight away, you still come away with something valuable to put on your CV, scenarios to talk about in interviews and experience to build on as you progress through your career.
I genuinely believe there is so much to gain from completing Work Experience, provided you approach it with an open mind and a willingness to learn.
It’s not just about what students gain either!
From a Work Placement Officer’s perspective, I’d also like to say a little something to Employers.
Giving young people the chance to experience the world of work is so valuable. It helps bridge that gap between education and employment and allows them to develop skills that will support them long after their placement has finished.
It’s not just a one-way street. Employers also have the opportunity to support the next generation coming into their industry, share their knowledge and experience and help young people understand what working in their sector is really like.
You never know, you might even meet your next employee!
For businesses in industries such as Marketing, where creativity and fresh ideas are so important, giving a student the opportunity to get involved can be a great way to bring new perspectives into your workplace.
And who knows? The student you offer a placement to today could be your next supervisor or assistant manager in the future.
Of course, students won’t know everything when they first walk through your door and that’s exactly the point. They’re there to learn from you! Give them the opportunity to ask questions, try new things and allow them to see how a workplace operates.
So, what’s stopping you?
Whether you’re a college student looking to take your first steps into the world of work or an employer thinking about offering Work Experience, I would really encourage you to give Work Experience a chance.
For students, be proactive, ask questions, get involved and make the most of an opportunity. You don’t need to be perfect and you certainly don’t need to know everything. A positive attitude, willingness to learn and a bit of initiative can go a long way.
For employers, remember that offering a placement could have a bigger impact than you realise. You could help a young person discover their passion and develop their confidence, all while helping to build your own employer pipeline too.
At the end of the day, Work Experience is about so much more than ticking a box on your college course or adding another line to your CV. It’s about opening doors, creating opportunities, building confidence and gaining experiences that could shape your future.
And that’s exactly why Work Experience matters more than you think! You never know where one opportunity might take you.
